Fighting back in Enfield and Southall

The West Londoner reports (various) that people in Enfield have had enough, came out on the streets and are protecting their property, their families and their friends. They do not deserve to be called vigilantes by journalists, both from the Guardian (Paul Lewis) and the Telegraph (who knows?) or by Nick du Bois, the local MP.

At 21.00 the West Londoner reports that in Southall the Sikhs are out in force by the gurdwara (the Sikh temple, since you ask). Together with yesterday's story of the Turkish and Kurdish shopkeepers in Dalston and its environs driving off the gangs of looters with baseball bats, these point to a trend.

  1. I agree with the previous Guest. Though it should be pointed out that they are probably breaking the law by being "armed and dangerous".

  2. ...Assuming they are carrying baseball bats. I just noticed that these aren't actually visible in the photo.

  3. Not sure whether the Sikhs were carrying baseball bats but I noted from some reports that the police spent some time dispersing the crowds who came to protect Eltham because they were Millwall supporters and ... shock, horror ... EDL members. Good to know those extra police are usefully employed.

  4. Turbans and jeans - now there's an interesting cultural juxtaposition!

  5. But not unusual. Sikhs do not have to wear anything special apart from turbans. Some are very natty dressers who match their turbans to the colour of their shirts or ties. I also remember some Sigh linesmen in Wimbledon who had turbans in the official colours of purple and green. So cool. Btw quite a lot of Musliims, male and female wear jeans under more traditional clothing.
